Meet Headband Jim: Physics and Astronomy professor, lifelong learner, and one of the most determined people we've ever had walk through our doors.
Jim came to Alloy carrying a lot: herniated discs in his lower back, a previously broken shoulder that still limited his movement, and some weight he'd put back on after losing it once before. He wanted structure and accountability. What he didn't know yet was how much he'd be capable of.
He always greets you with a 'How Do' and a story, usually one that involves the physics behind whatever exercise you just asked him to do. As a professor, Jim has a standard: 'I know what I'm talking about, and I want you to succeed.' He told us early on that our coaches embody exactly that. They understood his limitations and built around them instead of ignoring them.
The transformation has been remarkable. When Jim first started, he needed to sit down between every set to catch his breath. He couldn't get up from the floor on his own. Today, he holds a plank for over two minutes and transitions from floor to standing without a second thought. He walks longer distances with far less pain. He's lost over 50 pounds since joining, and last summer, he went on hikes in Arizona that would have been unimaginable when he started.
Exercise doesn't come naturally to Jim, but he attacks every set and every rep, with the same curiosity and determination he brings to the classroom. He knows he needs to train for the rest of his life. And he's told us he can see himself doing Alloy workouts forever. That's everything.
